How to Go From Penang to Kuala Lumpur?

By Air
The fastest and most direct way to get Penang-Kuala Lumpur is by the discount carrier www.airasia.com (Search my blog for entries on AirAsia & on the new Terminal Building). The Penang Int'l Airport is in Bayan Lepas 16km (10 miles) south of Georgetown.

Call AirAsia's toll-free center 1-300-88-9933 (Open 0800-2100 daily in Malaysia).(Thailand is 02-515-9999) (Singapore is 65-6733-9933)

AirAsia can be booked online w/a credit card (know your mailing address & ID No.). But faster just to get it done by phone, in-person or through a friend who can do it on-line for you. These are etickets - so you just need flight info & confirmation number when you check-in.

SAMPLE FLIGHTS n FARES RM 144.98 (US 39.72)

Sun, 02/Apr/2006 RM 49.99 + RM 32.50 (taxes/fees) = RM 82.49 (US 22.60) Flight AK6314 13:40-14:30 dep Kuala Lumpur (KUL) -arr Penang (PEN)

RM 264-345 (US 73-95) Estimated total cost of this trip
RM 40 - Taxi to/fr hotel in Penang-to-Airport (RM 20 x 2)
RM 145 - Cheapest round-trip flights on AirAsia
RM 79 - (LCCT-MTB RM 1.50 x 2)(KLIAEkspress RM 35 x 2)(LRT RM 2.60x2)
RM 160 - Taxis KLIA/KUL-KL (RM 95 & 65)

I recommend KLIA/KUL going by shuttle from the discount terminal to the main terminal and catching the train because I believe it will be faster in the long-run. The AirAsia RM9 bus to KL Sentral is supposed to leave on a set-schedule but then you'll have to deal with road traffic. Taxis are fine - but more expensive.

By Train
The state railroad Keretapi Tanah Melayu Berhad (KTMB) from Butterworth (the town on the mainland opposite Georgetown) to Kuala Lumpur takes approximately 6 hours. Contact KTMB offices at Port Weld in Penang (Tel: 604-261 0290) or Butterworth (Tel: 604-331 2796).

Malaysian train website sucks. It hides all the info you need to book a ticket. To see the schedule - click on the yellow box on the right "Inter-City Timetable" then under "North Bound." If ur lucky, you'll see a green box pop-up that says (in the far right hand column) from Butterworth (mainland city opposite Georgetown) train leaves at 2130 to arr 0635 the next day at KL Sentral (Kuala Lumpur).

Evidently, the Malaysia train company doesn't want to sell tickets online because their website is so hard to read and then it blocks you from buying a ticket on-line by having to figure out how to register onto their website. At the very bottom of the webpage, it says "General Line for KTM Berhad Headquarters : 603-2263 1111."

RETURN: one daily train KL Sentral-Butterworth dep 2045 (8.45pm) - arr 06.05am the next day.

By Bus
There are many bus services but also takes a long time. And most buses leave you in the dirty, crowded, grimy part of town where the taxis always overcharge.

Ticketing Agent: Pulau Pinang http://www.nadi.com.my Transnasional Bus Services are for the mass-market and not very foreigner-friendly because the stations and ticketing agents are not readily apparent. For instance, you'll have to choose the State of Pulau Pinang if you are staying in Georgetown, Penang and figure out where to go.
