Kuala Lumpur Tourist: Genting Highlands

Being in Kuala Lumpur means having the easy option of heading to Genting Highlands for the day. If you don't drive up, you can easily get there by taking a bus to the Genting Skyway. If you take the KL Sentral bus - it'll take an hour and then the tram is great - high above the rain forest you can see a lot of trees and huge ferns.

I'm sure you know that Genting is a huge complex of inter-connecting hotels and indoor/outdoor theme parks on a high peak surrounded by fog-enshroud jungle. It gets a lot of regional tourist groups from Hong Kong and Taiwan. Besides the fun parks, there are casinos, shopping, movie theater, bowling, huge arcades - it's like a mini-Disneyland. Gotta see the lobby of the huge First World Hotel for the artificial trees - a bit of Las Vegas.

The best meal deal is the 8-month old Coffee Terrace buffet - RM40 net for five food stations, dessert and self-serve iced water, coffee/tea. The local noodles like asam laksa are tasty, the Japanese teriyaki chicken is good, as is the deep fried squid. Oh, and they have an ice cream station with durian and yam.

We bought our tix from KL Sentral for 11:45AM - went up, ate a leisurely lunch, walked around and took the 4.30PM bus back down. So we were back at KL Sentral by 5:30PM and could take the LRT, KTM Komuter or Monorail. A very interesting diversion for locals and tourists.

Genting TIPS: If you intend to go into the casino for a bit of gambling (poker, baccarat, 21, slot machines - etc.), be sure to wear a polo shirt or some other shirt with a collar. The cable car ride over the jungle is quite nice - even more enjoyable if you sit on the left side of the cabin.
